To make it easier for you, we have organized the proposed routes in Bus Line Refresh by geographic area. You can click through the tabs below to view the network by the area you are interested in!

The proposed network has been organized by the regions in which the routes provide service: Downtown, Oakland, North, East, South, and West. There is also a tab to explore the proposed Community Circulators. The maps are for exploration only, if you want to provide comments on the map, please go to the Bus Line Refresh Map page. To provide your input on each route, click on the desired route in the tables below the maps and complete the survey questions for that route.

Downtown Pittsburgh

Downtown Routes

Downtown Pittsburgh is the hub of PRT’s service area, and strong service to Downtown would remain in PRT’s Bus Line Refresh proposal. Sixty-two bus routes would serve Downtown Pittsburgh. Most of these routes would operate all day, every day, providing consistent, reliable, and accessible service.

Many commuter routes did not rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic due to changing patterns and remote work opportunities. As a result, service to Downtown will shift to times of day and routes that need it the most.

How is PRT proposing to modify service to Downtown?

  • Fewer commuter routes Downtown at peak times – Bus Line Refresh has fewer peak-only commuter routes than the current network, as many of those routes have not rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic compared to other routes.
  • Improved access and service frequencies throughout the day, in the evenings, and on weekends. By reducing service at peak times, Bus Line Refresh reinvests those hours into more frequency throughout the day, at night, and on weekends to Downtown.
  • Maintain one-seat ride connections Downtown for the vast majority of riders – 91% of riders who live within walking distance to the Bus Line Refresh network will have a one-seat ride to and from Downtown.

During public engagement for the previous draft network plan, we also heard from a growing number of Downtown residents who are moving to the location so they can walk and use transit to get to destinations throughout Allegheny County. This new pattern of transit use reverses the historic pattern and has been incorporated into Bus Line Refresh.

Oakland Routes

Oakland Routes

Public input continues to show a strong desire for one-seat rides to Oakland. These connections help more people reach jobs, schools, health care, entertainment, and places where they can shop, buy services, and do business. PRT’s Bus Line Refresh proposes to increase the number of Allegheny County residents who have a one-seat ride to Oakland by approximately 3,500.

How is PRT proposing to better connect to Oakland?

In addition to the existing one-seat rides to Oakland from Downtown, Uptown, Squirrel Hill, McKeesport, Braddock, and Aspinwall, Bus Line Refresh is proposing new one-seat rides to Oakland from the following areas:

  • McCandless
  • Ross
  • Millvale
  • Mt. Lebanon and Dormont
  • Brentwood
  • Carrick
  • Carnegie and all West Busway Stations (by lifting stop restrictions on west busway for X28)

These areas include corridors with high transit demand and were chosen based on public input, service requests, and an effort to provide connections from various regions of the county.

The routes are designed to benefit from transit demand in both directions. For example, new direct service from the North Hills to Oakland will make it easier for residents in the North Hills to travel to Oakland for work, healthcare and other services. The new service also makes it easier for transit-dependent residents in eastern Pittsburgh neighborhoods to travel to jobs and other destinations in the North Hills where this is significant growth. This new connection would have the added benefit of reducing traffic congestion in Oakland.

Community Circulators

Community Circulators

A community circulator is a fixed-route service that expands access to local destinations like grocery stores and healthcare facilities, but primarily stay within a community. They allow riders to connect to routes that serve the broader bus network throughout Allegheny County. This proposal replaces the microtransit concept that PRT introduced with the first draft. The Bus Line Refresh circulators are modeled after historic transit routes, bringing back connections requested by the community in Natrona Heights, Penn Hills, and McKeesport. These routes can be operated with PRT’s current funding levels, operators, and vehicle fleet. These fixed-route services include:

  • “N3 New Kensington - Natrona Heights” with connections to Routes L1 and N1 to bring riders to East Liberty, Downtown Pittsburgh, and the East Busway
  • “N72 Penn Hills – Monroeville Mall” with connections to all the routes serving Penn Hills Shopping Center and Monroeville Mall
  • “N63 Olympia – Crawford Village” with connections to all the routes serving the McKeesport Transportation Center
