Transit demand in Allegheny County is much greater than PRT can provide with its current funding. This proposal responds to those needs with a menu of potential services that could address these needs but requires additional funding.

What could be possible with additional funding?

This proposal creates a menu of services that PRT could provide with more funding and what those services would cost. The total cost of these proposals corresponds approximately with a 20% increase in service hours.

The menu includes:

  • Expansion of 20-Minute or Better Service. More routes operating at 20-minute or better frequencies.
  • 30-40-60-Minute Service Improvements. More routes operating at improved service frequencies and operating with expanded service span (hours of they day and days of the week that service is provided).
  • Airport Service Expansion. New routes connecting the North Hills and South Hills to the airport.
  • Microtransit Service Expansion. Five new microtransit zones to serve low-density areas. These include North Hills, Reserve Township, McKees Rocks, Oakland, Pleasant Hills.

PRT will work with all levels of government, employers, and other potential funders to identify opportunities to fund and provide these services.

Potential Costs

The Plus 20% Proposal would cost $75.4 million more than PRT’s annual O&M costs over the Base Draft Network’s O&M costs of $405 million. Microtransit service expansion would cost $12.6 million, Airport Service Expansion would cost $11.6 million, 30-40-60
