Public input showed a strong desire for one-seat rides to Oakland from throughout Allegheny County. These connections allow more people to access jobs, education, health care, entertainment, and commercial activities.
How is PRT proposing to better connect to Oakland?
In addition to the existing one-seat rides to Oakland from McKeesport, Homestead, and many East End communities, the Draft Network 1.0 is proposing new one-seat rides to Oakland from the following areas:
- North Hills
- Millvale
- Mt Lebanon and Dormont
- Brentwood
- Carrick
- Aspinwall and Sharpsburg
These areas include existing corridors with high transit demand and were chosen based on input during the first phase of the project, service requests, and an effort to provide geographical.
The routes are designed to benefit from transit demand in both directions. For example, hospitals, businesses, residents, and elected officials in the North Hills asked PRT to consider expanding transit service along the McKnight Road corridor. This service would allow employers there to attract transit-dependent employees living in areas to the south, but the proposed service would also make it easier for residents in the North Hills to travel south via transit to Oakland for work, health care, and other services. This would have the added benefit of reducing traffic congestion in Oakland.
