About the Project

Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) is progressing towards 90% design for the redevelopment of the Carnegie Station complex. The existing park and ride, operator relief facility, and station are located on PRT-owned property in Carnegie Borough, Allegheny County, PA, at the terminus of the West Busway.

Today, the complex contains approximately 200 surface lot parking spaces for riders, a 24’x8’ station shelter for boarding, one (1) single-occupancy operator restroom facility, and a layover area for five (5) 40’-buses.

This redevelopment initiative focuses on modernizing the bus station area to significantly improve daily operations and the overall transit experience. The project aims to increase layover capabilities and upgrade operator amenities, enhance safe and accessible boarding for paratransit services, and revitalize the station area to create a modern, efficient hub for

the region.

Main features of this project include:

  • Expansion of the boarding platform to accommodate loading of two (2) articulated buses
  • New modern shelter canopy spanning the full platform for covered loading
  • Passenger drop-off and pick-up area close to the boarding area
  • Dedicated space for paratransit vehicle parking
  • A new, larger, relief facility for Operators
  • Space for overhead charging equipment to power multiple electric buses
  • Increasing bus layover capacity
  • Surface lot repaving
  • Bike parking
  • New sidewalks
  • Updated wayfinding signage

Additional work to enhance the ADA access to Mansfield Boulevard will be considered pending the outcome and timeline of the railroad being converted to rails to trails. Information on that endeavor can be found on the Borough’s website: https://carnegieborough.com/trail/support.html

Progressing towards 90% design, stay tuned for public meeting schedule announcement

Project Location

The map shows the location of Carnegie Station and park and ride at the southern end of PRT's West Busway where West Main Street intersects with Mansfield Boulevard in Carnegie Borough.

The redesign of Carnegie Station complex has gone through a few iterations over the years, but the intent of the project has remained the same: enhance public, customer, and operator experience.

The last major project update was shared with the community in November 2023. At that time, the proposed plans included a 5-story bus garage designed to accommodate pre-pandemic ridership levels.

While ridership continues to increase, recent trends show that passenger growth is stabilizing at a pace that no longer requires a facility of that scale. As a result, we have adjusted our plans to optimize the project while continuing to meet the region's current and future public transit needs.

All other core project features remain unchanged, including a separate passenger drop-off area with dedicated space for paratransit vans, larger and upgraded facilities for transit operators, and designated areas to evaluate potential future transit-oriented development (TOD).

PRT is engaging with the following partners during design:

  • Genessee and Wyoming Railroad

Anticipated Construction Value: $15M
